Late work pushes CU Buffs past Grand Gulch

LAS VEGAS — Following three consecutive lopsided victories, Colorado was sorely tested by Grand Canyon on Tuesday night.

The Lopes gave the Buffaloes all they could handle. But CU ultimately passed the test.

On a hot shooting night by both teams, the Buffs once again got the job done at the free throw line to hold off Grand Canyon for a 74-64 win at T-Mobile Arena. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Buffs in their final scheduled nonconference game of the season, as CU will turn its attention to a challenging run of three consecutive road games to start Pac-12 Conference play next week.

The game was tied 27-27 at halftime but the Buffs opened up a nine-point lead on a Maddox Daniels 3-pointer with about 8 minutes left. Grand Canyon kept things close with an 11-3 run to pull within a point with 5:16 remaining, but the Buffs scored the next 10 points to pull away down the stretch.

Point guard McKinley Wright turned in another spectacular all-around performance, going 8-for-14 from the field while recording 21 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. The Buffs shot a torrid .615 after halftime (16-for-26), offsetting a .509 shooting performance by Grand Canyon.

CU committed four turnovers in the game’s first 10 minutes but recorded just three the rest of the way. It was a season-high shooting performance by a CU opponent, but the Buffs defense was able to force 17 turnovers. CU was outrebounded for the first time this season, with Grand Canyon posting a 33-20 edge on the glass.

Evan Battey survived foul trouble to score 16 points, while Jeriah Horned added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. CU entered the game leading the nation in free throw percentage and kept that momentum rolling against the Lopes, going 18-for-21 at the line.
