Broncos Mailbag: Could Vic Fangio, Drew Lock and John Elway all be back in 2021?

Denver Post Broncos writer Ryan O’Halloran posts his Broncos Mailbag weekly during the season.

You can pose a Broncos- or NFL-related question for the Broncos Mailbag here. Follow Ryan for more daily updates on Twitter.

While I don’t agree with your colleague who wants to trade Von Miller after every loss, (Mark Kiszla), I do agree when he mentions it’s time to start over, fire our beloved quarterback/befuddled general manager John Elway, fire the coaches and find a new quarterback. It’s a little soon to run Drew Lock out of town, but I agree with everything else. My question is, if not Elway, who should we look to for a new GM? I assume they would bring in their own coach, but who would we look to there as well?
— Ryan, Phoenix

Here’s the big issue with making wholesale Broncos changes: Who’s going to make the decision and how willing is the franchise to pay coaches to not work?

The Broncos’ day-to-day operations, in lieu of having no owner, are run by president/CEO Joe Ellis. It remains possible the team could be sold in the near future and does Ellis feel comfortable saddling a new owner with a large buyout check? I wouldn’t think so.

An Elway-Vic Fangio-Lock trio at the top of the Broncos’ masthead in 2021 shouldn’t be discounted for a second.

When Elway decides to retire from front office work, that’s when things get interesting. Does the person in charge want to start over by looking outside the organization? Do they go for an experienced GM or a newbie? And the same for the head coach — hire a first-timer for the third consecutive cycle or go for a recycled candidate?

Any idea when Phillip Lindsay will return?
— Kurt, Denver

Lindsay is expected to be available Sunday at New England after missing the last three games with a turf toe injury sustained in the first half of Week 1.

On Friday, Fangio said Lindsay was “ready” to play against the New York Jets, but Fangio didn’t feel it was right to play Lindsay without the benefit of a full practice. It will be interesting to see the extent of Lindsay’s role in his return — do the Broncos work him in or have a relatively even split between him and Melvin Gordon?

Ryan, it seemed like there was an injury every other play on Thursday. Is this a reflection on Thursday games when teams don’t get enough rest? Or is it that we need to stop using artificial turf?
— Brandon, Lakewood

The Broncos reported two injuries after the game — receiver KJ Hamler (hamstring) and tight end Noah Fant (ankle).

On Fant’s play, he was injured while being tackled so that’s a football deal regardless of it being a Thursday game on an artificial surface.

Fangio said Hamler’s injury isn’t to the same part of the hamstring that he tweaked during training camp. A short week may have contributed to that soft tissue issue.

I saw Sylvester Williams was re-signed last week. Do you think he could make an impact on the defense with the injury to Jurrell Casey? It would be a nice feel-good story after his not-so-good first run here in Denver.
— Mark R., Arvada

The Broncos signed Williams, a former first-round pick, to their practice squad. Once they assess his level of conditioning, he is a possibility to join the defensive line rotation.

Williams, 31, played for the Broncos from 2013-16, appearing in 60 games (48 starts) and making 94 tackles.

Williams signed with Tennessee as a free agent in 2016, but lasted only one season. He played for Detroit/Miami in ’18 and the Los Angeles Chargers last year.

So, big question: Who will start at QB in Week 5? I know it won’t be Jeff Driskel. Brett Rypien did a nice job in the first half last week, but is it time to try out Blake Bortles? It sure would be nice to have a veteran arm in there until Drew Lock heals.
— Matt Sanchez, Denver

Fangio said Rypien will start against New England if Lock’s right shoulder keeps him out for a third consecutive game.

Driskel had his shot and the question left for him is what his role will be once Lock is healthy (No. 2 behind Lock, No. 3 behind Lock/Rypien, practice squad?).

Going into the Jets game, I thought if Rypien struggled like Driskel did against Tampa Bay, the Broncos should give Bortles a shot. But despite the three interceptions, Rypien will get another start if Lock is inactive.

I haven’t heard left tackle Garett Bolles’ name much at all this season and that’s a good thing. Did he finally figure things out? Is he becoming that left tackle we’ve been waiting years for? I love how much fire he had at the end of Thursday’s game when he was yelling at the Jets.
— Zach M., Wichita, Kan.

Through four games, I’ve charted Bolles as allowing five quarterback knockdowns, but no sacks and no pressures. Also allowing five “disruptions” are right guard Graham Glasgow and injured right tackle Elijah Wilkinson.

As a run blocker, I’ve booked Bolles with 1 1/2 “bad” run plays (gain of one or fewer yards, not including goal-line/short-yardage), tied with Wilkinson and center Lloyd Cushenberry for fewest among the line.
