Karl Dorrell opens 2020 CU Buffs football schedule vs. UCLA

Karl Dorrell’s inaugural season with the CU Buffs finally has a start date. And a dance partner in Week 1 with a familiar feel.

The first-year Buffs football coach will open the season at home Nov. 7 against UCLA, the Pac-12 announced on Saturday morning as part of a league-wide schedule release of an abbreviated, coronavirus-shortened 2020 slate.

Dorrell’s last head-coaching job in college football was with the Bruins, with whom he posted a 35-27 record from 2003-07.

CU will play three games at home and three on the road, with a seventh league game slated for the third week of December either taking place in the conference championship or against a North division foe to be determined the week prior. It was not known Saturday whether that would be a home or an away matchup.

Dorrell is the first Buffs coach to open his tenure at home since Dan Hawkins in 2006 and the first to open in November since Joe Mills in 1918.

The 1918 Buffs also had their season — and, indeed, campus life — significantly impacted by a global pandemic and only played five games that season, posting a 2-3 mark as a member of the Rocky Mountain Conference.

CU’s 2020 regular season is slated for the latest finish in school history. The seven games are the fewest the Buffs have played in a campaign since 1943, a schedule that had been impacted by World War II.
