Broncos Briefs: Phillip Lindsay skeptical to play Sunday, yet proceeding from toe accident

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay returned to practice Friday for the first time since sustaining a turf toe injury in the Sept. 14 loss to Tennessee.

Lindsay was listed as a limited participant and is doubtful to face Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Asked if Lindsay is progressing toward playing Thursday at the New York Jets, coach Vic Fangio said: “I think so. I thought he looked pretty good in the limited stuff he was doing. I think he’s trending in the right direction for sure.”

The Broncos ruled out quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) and cornerback Davontae Harris (hamstring).

Receiver Jerry Jeudy (ribs) is listed as questionable even though he did the full Friday practice.

Brady salutes Von. It will be weird for the 5,700 fans permitted to attend Sunday’s game to see Tom Brady in a Tampa Bay uniform. And it will be weird for Brady to face a Broncos team minus outside linebacker Von Miller (ankle).

“I think I’ve played a lot of meaningful games against him and there is nobody that’s more of an incredible player than him,” Brady told Tampa-area reporters. “It’s tough to see guys miss football seasons, (especially) guys in the prime of their career.

“He’s as good of a player as there is on the defensive side of the ball in NFL history. He’s just exceptional in every way. … I hope he gets back out there healthy and I’m sure he will be back being the great player that he is next year.”

Fixing protections. The Broncos allowed Lock and Jeff Driskel to get battered in last week’s loss at Pittsburgh (seven sacks, 12 knockdowns and five pressures).

“We just have to take the proper sets and use the technique (offensive line coach Mike Munchak) has been teaching them to do,” Fangio said. “When you’ve got a good player to block, you can’t try and fudge and start getting away from your technique. Obviously, we’re going to have to do better when they do get the one-on-one pass-rush situations and we should be able to help them some, too.”

Tampa Bay has six sacks in two games, including two apiece from Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh. Against Carolina last week, the Buccaneers rushed five players on eight Teddy Bridgewater drop-backs and six players on five drop-backs.

More takeaways. It took the Broncos until Week 5 last year to produce a takeaway, but they had two last week at Pittsburgh that led to 10 points. Safety Justin Simmons had an interception and safety Kareem Jackson recovered a fumble forced by defensive end Shelby Harris.

“It was a great thing because we were in the locker room at halftime and we weren’t feeling too good about ourselves,” defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said. “The defense responded and got us two quick ones and got the ball rolling and got us back into the ballgame so we want to build on that and make it snowball.”

Four quarterbacks on roster. The Broncos have four quarterbacks on the active roster after they signed Blake Bortles and promoted Brett Rypien from the practice squad.

Rypien will be the No. 2 behind Driskel on Sunday. Bortles’ first practices were Thursday and Friday.

“He did some of the scout-team work and got some snaps with the offense off to the side,” Fangio said. “It’s hard to tell right now (how Bortles looks), but he still throws it good.”

Driskel using athleticism. One of the pluses for Driskel is his ability to move around and out of the pocket. At Florida, he often ran run-pass option plays to pick up yards.

“Week in and week out, it’s a play being called across the league and if executed the right way, it’s hard to defend,” Driskel said. “It’s a selective thing.”

Briefly. Fangio said the spirit within the facility this week after an 0-2 start has been “healthy. The guys, I think they’re frustrated with everything that’s happened here in the first couple weeks, but I think their mindset is good and they’ve had a good attitude during the week.” … Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon on the Broncos’ struggles at Pittsburgh: “Terrible with a capital T. Poor tackling. We didn’t catch the snap (resulting in a safety) — no excuses. Coverage was not good in terms of lanes. We had a lot of things to clean up this week.” … Outside linebacker Bradley Chubb practiced after getting a rest day on Thursday.
