Here’s a look at how various publications rate the Broncos in their power rankings entering Week 2:
The Athletic (No. 27): “Vic Fangio could use a hand with clock management. … I’ll never understand why head coaches don’t outsource clock management to a specific staffer rather than insist on doing it on their own. Fangio did not give his team the best chance to win Monday night,” Sheil Kapadia writes.
Bleacher Report (No. 18): “The Broncos showed Monday night they are capable of hanging with a quality opponent. But Denver also has limitations, especially when you consider all the injuries. This isn’t a team that can afford big mistakes — whether they are made by players or the coach.”
CBS Sports (No. 21): “It wasn’t pretty against the Titans, but they hung around against a good team. The offense needs to generate more points,” Pete Prisco writes.
ESPN (No. 23): “Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy had flashes of his vast potential but also had two key drops in the game, including one that could have gone a long way to seal an upset win. Cornerback Michael Ojemudia was tossed into the deep end of the pool when A.J. Bouye left the game because of a shoulder injury and held up well. But Cushenberry, against a stout Titans front, held up well on a night when quarterback Drew Lock wasn’t sacked. The Broncos like Cushenberry’s smarts and athleticism, and both were on display for much of the evening,” Jeff Legwold writes.
NFL.com (No. 21): “The Broncos’ aggravating 2019 trait of blowing games in the final minute reared its ugly head again on Monday night, and Vic Fangio played his part. The coach’s decision to pocket his three timeouts during the Titans’ go-ahead field-goal drive in the final minutes of regulation served as an egregious clock-management error that put Drew Lock and the offense in a hopeless situation,” Dan Hanzus writes.
Sporting News (No. 21): “The Broncos lost Von Miller and that is a big blow to their good defensive vibes. Wide receiver injuries are already bringing down their offensive optimism with Drew Lock, too,” Vinnie Iyer writes.
USA Today (No. 16): “Even without OLB Von Miller, Denver may actually live or die with a defense that should make a jump in second year under Vic Fangio,” Nate Davis writes.
Yahoo! Sports (No. 23): “The Broncos won’t want to watch the film of Monday night’s loss. They had way too many brutal mistakes, like rookie Jerry Jeudy’s two drops, not getting in the end zone on fourth down at the 1-yard line, an interception taken off the board due to a defensive penalty and Melvin Gordon’s key fumble in the first half. And then Vic Fangio absolutely blew it by not calling timeouts when the Titans got into field-goal range in the final minute. The Broncos had plenty of heartbreaking losses last season, and that’s how this season started, too,” Frank Schwab writes.
