Broncos quarterback Drew Lock out for three-to-five weeks along with shoulder personal injury, Vic Fangio points out

After two narrow losses to open the season and a rash of injuries already, the Broncos’ prospects to return to the playoffs this year just got more bleak.

Coach Vic Fangio said Monday that quarterback Drew Lock, who was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss in Pittsburgh, has a right shoulder injury and will be out “three to four to five weeks.”

“It all depends upon the healing process,” Fangio said. “There’s nothing structurally wrong. He just has a bad bruise there, and when it’s your throwing shoulder, it’s going to take time to heal.”

Lock’s injury means an extended opportunity for Jeff Driskel, who was 18-of-34 for 256 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in relief of Lock on Sunday. Behind Driskel, second-year pro Brett Rypien (currently on the practice squad) will be the backup.

Additionally, wideout Courtland Sutton, who missed the season opener due to a shoulder injury, will be out the rest of the year due to a knee injury, Fangio confirmed. Sutton tore his ACL late in the first half Sunday after making a tackle on an interception return.

Dre’Mont Jones also suffered a knee injury in the loss, and Fangio said he expects the second-year defensive lineman to miss “significant time,” likely around a month. That will likely mean a trip to injured reserve for Jones. Fellow defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker, who exited Sunday with a calf injury, “is going to miss some time also.”

That quartet of injuries are on top of what Denver was already dealing with prior to the loss in Pittsburgh. All-Pro linebacker Von Miller (ankle) and No. 1 cornerback A.J. Bouye (shoulder) are both on injured reserve, and it’s unclear if Miller will be healthy again in time to return this season.

Plus, running back Phillip Lindsay suffered a toe injury in the Week 1 loss to Tennessee and was inactive in Week 2. Rookie tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (hip) has also been inactive the first couple weeks.

This story will be updated.
