DU Pioneers, Colorado College hockey times put off as NCHC pushes back 2020-21 start

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Thursday announced it is delaying the start of the 2020-21 hockey season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The conference’s board unanimously approved the decision on Tuesday.

The NCHC includes the Colorado College Tigers and Denver Pioneers.

The season was slated to begin in October, but has been been pushed back to Nov. 20 at the earliest, according to the NCHC.

“The health and safety of all involved across the campus communities, particularly our student-athletes, is the top priority,” NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton said in a news release. “We fully expect NCHC hockey to be back this season. As COVID-19 continues to have an impact on higher education, we have an obligation to host athletic competitions in a safe and responsible manner. We are committed to doing everything we conceivably can to provide competitive experiences that our student-athletes deserve. This delay affords us valuable time to continue formulating plans to start the season successfully.”

This is a developing story.
