Josh Fuentes made his Rockies presence felt this season primarily at first base, but as his MLB talent continues to rise, the 26-year-old standout is willing to move around.
“If you’re a one-position guy, you usually play every day,” Fuentes said. “You don’t see Nolan or Story going into the outfield or anything like that. … At the same time, you’ve got to do what’s best for the team. If that’s being a utility guy and me playing left and right (field) like I did (Thursday), then that’s what I’ve got to do, as long as I’m in the lineup and playing.”
Fuentes entered Friday’s doubleheader in Arizona with a .321 batting average and 15 RBI over 26 games. His power shows room for improvement, though, with two home runs.
“Everyone loves hitting homers,” Fuentes said. “I like hitting for average, so I really don’t want to mess with that and try to go deep. But I just started. I have like 50 games in the big leagues. Maybe I adjust, get a little stronger and get a little smarter, and maybe I hit homers.
“Right now, I feel what I do best is putting barrel on the ball. That’s what I’m going to try and do.”
Fuentes was a bright spot in a dismal Rockies season that will end without the playoffs.
“I’m so blessed just to be here,” Fuentes said. “I love being around the guys. I thoroughly enjoy practice, BP and hanging around the cage. That’s just my favorite stuff to do.”
Kemp ejected. Rockies designated hitter Matt Kemp was ejected in the third inning of Game 1 against the Diamondbacks on Friday. It occurred after a strikeout looking as Kemp argued the call with home plate umpire Jim Reynolds. Kemp was tossed when he walked back to the Colorado dugout.
“Like any ball and strike call, there is just a little bit of emotion on both sides,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “I don’t know exactly what the exchange was. I got out there after they were discussing a few things. … The last word might have got (Kemp). I’m not sure.”
