Mountain Ranges' Charlie Blackmon attacks grand slam walk-off to punch Angels

Charlie Blackmon ripped a grand slam over the right-field fence to give Colorado a wild 8-4 walk-off victory over the Angels at Coors Field on Friday night.

Rockies’ starting pitcher German Marquez threw seven strong innings, the bullpen lost the lead but a resilient Rockies’ offense battled back for a dramatic victory. Colorado, after being swept in three games by the Padres this week, turned the page in a big way to start a nine-game homestand, inching a bit closer toward the eighth and final National League playoff spot at 21-23.

The Angels took a first-inning lead when Rockies shortstop Trevor Story uncharacteristically made an errant throw to second on a fielder’s choice that allowed LA’s Jared Walsh to score. The Angels kept their momentum rolling when Justin Upton slapped a first-pitch single to left, sending Mike Trout home, to go up 2-0.

That’s when Marquez — 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA over his previous six starts — finally found his rhythm. He allowed six hits and struck out five.

The Rockies tied the game in the third. Set up by a Josh Fuentes single and Tony Wolters walk, Story blasted an RBI double to deep center. A Blackmon sacrifice fly scored Wolters. The stalemate extended into the fifth inning when Story blasted a stand-up triple off the right-field wall that brought home Ramel Tapia, giving Colorado its first lead, 3-2, which the bullpen could not hold.

The Rockies turned to newly acquired reliever Mychal Givens in the eighth and Daniel Bard in the ninth. Both Colorado relievers allowed solo home runs (Walsh and Anthony Bemboom) as LA took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Rockies’ infielder Ryan McMahon tied the game with a homer to left. Colorado loaded the bases with a Josh Fuentes double and walks to Daniel Murphy and Story. Blackmon’s grand slam was the third of his career.
