Broncos Briefs: Denver still preparing to journey, participate in New England Sunday after latest Patriots positive test

Broncos coach Vic Fangio’s message to his players after Friday’s practice: Prepare to travel Saturday and play Sunday.

The status of the Broncos-New England game was thrust into doubt Friday morning when the Patriots canceled practice following a positive coronavirus test.

“We’re getting good at (adjusting),” Fangio said. “Every time it happens, we get better at it. … We’ve done great. Our players have been fantastic with all this stuff.

“We’re under the assumption and understanding that this game will go off on time (Sunday at 11 a.m.) and anything that happens otherwise, it will happen when it happens.”

Despite the scheduling changes, which included the Broncos taking their bye last weekend, Fangio isn’t presenting a “woe is us” company line.

“I know a lot of people who have had their lives interrupted in a very negative way, whether it be the illness itself, whether it be losing their job, whether it be having to take a pay cut,” Fangio said. “Small businesses, people who have worked all their lives to establish a business, are really struggling right now and I know small-business owners from all over the country from where I’ve been.

“Luckily here in the NFL so far, as players and coaches, we haven’t missed any paychecks so we’re just going to keep fighting through it and consider ourselves lucky. Yes, we have been inconvenienced and there are a lot of protocols to follow and some of them can be a little overbearing at times, but (they) are necessary.”

A timeline of the events since the Broncos’ last game (Oct. 1 at the New York Jets) is required.

Oct. 3: Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. The New England-Kansas City game was moved from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5.

Oct. 6: Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s positive test is revealed.

Oct. 8: The NFL moved the Broncos-Patriots game to Monday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.

Oct. 10: New England reopened its facility.

Last Sunday: Reacting to another positive Patriots test, the NFL postponed the Broncos-Patriots game until this Sunday.

Friday: The Patriots’ facility closed after a positive test.

Lock trending right way. The Broncos listed quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) as questionable even though he has practiced fully all week.

“He is trending the right way (to starting),” Fangio said.

Fangio said he and Lock will “have a final conversation about where he’s at,” before he makes a decision.

Hamler, Attaochu out. The Broncos ruled out receiver KJ Hamler (hamstring) and outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu (quad), both of whom were hurt in the Week 4 win over the New York Jets.

Besides Gordon and Lock, nose tackle Mike Purcell (knee) and tight end Noah Fant (ankle) are questionable.
