When the Broncos’ traveling party arrived at their facility Saturday morning, they found something missing: All of the cafeteria chairs had been removed.
And when they return to work Wednesday morning after getting Monday and Tuesday off, the Broncos will encounter other changes to where they can have lunch, what places they can meet and how many people are allowed in the weight room.
“We’re working through them (Monday and Tuesday),” coach Vic Fangio said. “We’ll have it all situated by (Wednesday).”
Fangio’s mantra this year is “improvise and adjust,” and this week will once again require both after running backs coach Curtis Modkins tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
Because of Modkins’ positive test, the Broncos adopted the NFL’s supplemental intensive protocols.
“We’ll change some meeting rooms around,” Fangio said. “We had already done that two weeks ago because with all of the injures we’ve had, we actually have more players here right now than we had during training camp.”
Fangio said the offensive meetings moved to the indoor practice facility last week and that will continue.
“There’s a chance that we may put some of the defense over there this week, too, just for the spacing issue,” he said.
Spacing to accommodate social distancing is the Broncos’ biggest challenge, and they are taking it to another level this week.
In the main facility, the regular media room has been turned into the linebackers’ meeting room. Players are prohibited from eating in the facility this week. They must pick up their meals in the cafeteria and either eat in their car or at home. Coaches and staff members can only eat in the building if they’re alone in their office. The weight room capacity is 10 players and five support personnel. And the non-coaching staff has been encouraged to work from home.
On Monday, Fangio said Modkins isn’t expected back at the facility this week. His son, Jett, a Broncos coaching intern who is living this season with his father, is also in isolation, but is able to carry out most of his duties. It is possible Curtis could conduct his positional meetings via Zoom from home.
In Sunday’s win over the Patriots, tight ends coach Wade Harman handled the running back play-time rotation.
The Broncos’ third road trip of the year was different than their games in Pittsburgh against the Steelers and New Jersey against the Jets. The Broncos bought out the entire hotel so there weren’t any non-tested guests potentially crossing paths with players and coaches.
Eating together in a ballroom remained prohibited, leaving the players and coaches to get grab-and-go food in the lobby, where a makeshift buffet was assembled, and return to their rooms. On Saturday night, all of the Broncos’ meetings were held virtually and on Sunday, from 6:30-9:30 a.m., every player and coach was tested for COVID-19 at the hotel, a mandate added league-wide before Modkins’ positive test.
