8 Colorado senior high school football activities to view in Week 4

Class 5A

Castle View (2-0) vs. No. 2 Valor Christian (3-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Valor Stadium

Last meeting: Valor Christian 42, vs. Castle View 7, on Oct. 4, 2019

Castle View’s offense has been unstoppable through two games, racking up 90 points and 987 yards in wins over ThunderRidge and Rock Canyon. Now comes the toughest test of the season — a challenge that is two-fold for the Sabercats. First, can they move the ball against a Valor defense that hasn’t given up a single point in three weeks? Second, can they slow down five-star tailback Gavin Sawchuk, who already has 621 yards of offense and nine TDs?

Legacy (3-0) vs. No. 6 Fairview (3-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Christian Recht Field

Last meeting: Fairview 49, at Legacy 31, on Oct. 4, 2019

After shutting out a second team in three games, the Knights take on a Lightning squad that just slapped 47 points on Prairie View. Legacy back Braelon Tate, who has 393 yards and six touchdowns on 75 carries, runs into a Fairview defense with 26.0 tackles for loss to its name. On the other side of the ball, QB Liam O’Brien has thrown for 300-plus yards twice, including last week’s 18-of-29, 321-yard night against previously unbeaten Fossil Ridge.

No. 5 Eaglecrest (3-0) vs. Arapahoe (2-1)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at LPS Stadium

Last meeting: Eaglecrest 28, at Arapahoe 0, on Oct. 24, 2019

Playing an unforgiving Centennial League schedule, the Raptors are averaging 53.3 points per game with wins over Cherokee Trail, Grandview and Overland. Now comes a meeting with Arapahoe, which has won two in a row and likely needs to win at least two of its last three to have any hope of making the eight-team 5A playoff bracket.

Mullen (1-1) vs. No. 3 Columbine (3-0)

When/where: 6 p.m. Thursday at Jeffco Stadium

Last meeting: Columbine 43, at Mullen 3, on Oct. 4, 2019

Following a 3-0 start to the season, Columbine enters the most difficult stretch of its schedule with games against Mullen, Ralston Valley and Pomona in succession. The Mustangs hung tough with Ralston Valley in a 21-3 opening-game loss after starting their schedule a week late due to COVID-19, then scored 17 second-half points to beat Arvada West 20-17 in Week 3. Such a slow start won’t work against the Rebels, who have outscored opponents 68-10 in the first half.

Class 4A

No. 7 Montrose (3-0) vs. No. 2 Palmer Ridge (3-0)

When/where: 6 p.m. Friday at Monument

Last meeting: Montrose 48, vs. Palmer Ridge 7, on Aug. 30, 2013

The Bears cruised through their first three weeks in Class 4A, outscoring opponents 146-7 behind QB Luke McAllister (761 yards, 13 TDs, 2 INTs) and pass catchers Marcellus Reed (nine receptions, 309 yards), Kaden Dudley (10-180) and Anthony Costanzo (7-141). Montrose, unbeaten and averaging 39.7 points per game itself, will be the fist of three big tests for Palmer Ridge, with games against Fruita Monument and Ponderosa following in succeeding weeks.

No. 9 Fountain-Fort Carson (3-0) vs. No. 8 Pueblo West (3-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Cyclone Stadium

Last meeting: Pueblo West 35, vs. Fountain-Fort Carson 6, on Oct. 30, 2009

Fountain-Fort Carson running back Q Jones was robbed of his junior season, and now the 5-foo-11, 180-pound senior is taking it out on the rest of the state. Jones, who ran for 1,406 yards as a sophomore, is on pace to hit the century mark yet again in this abbreviated fall campaign with 704 yards and 12 touchdowns through three games. The degree of difficulty will be ratcheted up this week, however, against a Pueblo West defense that’s given up just 20 points all season.

Class 3A

No. 7 Green Mountain (3-0) vs. No. 8 Palisade (2-1)

When/where: 6 p.m. Friday at Ralph Stocker Stadium

Last meeting: Green Mountain 28, at Palisade 14, on Sept. 13, 2019

Through three weeks, the Rams have shown there’s life after all-everything quarterback Trey Towndrow. His replacement, senior Darius Padilla, has filled in admirably for the two-time all-state pick, putting up 701 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns. Up next is a Palisade team that’s smarting after getting taken behind the woodshed by second-ranked Lutheran, 54-24. The Bulldogs have a very capable run game that’s chewed up 837 yards so far this season.

Pueblo County (2-1) vs. No. 2 Lutheran (3-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Lutheran

Last meeting: N/A

Speaking of second-ranked Lutheran, the Lions have been a wrecking ball so far this fall with two wins over ranked opponents (Discovery Canyon and Palisade) and 160 points scored. Quarterback Clayton Jacobs is punishing teams with his arm (574 yards, 8 TDs) and legs (218 yards, 3 TDs), while Ryan Kenny (318, 4 TDS) and Dorian Pacheco (305, 6 TDs) gash teams out of the backfield. Pity poor Pueblo County, which gets the unenviable task of trying to slow them down a week after losing to third-ranked Durango, 49-21.
