Broncos right guard Graham Glasgow’s season was momentarily derailed Oct. 30 when he received a 5 a.m. phone call: He had tested positive for COVID-19 and was prohibited from entering the team facility for 10 days.
“I had a lot of coughing, stuffy nose, stuff like that — I was still able to smell and taste, but I do have asthma so a little bit of the respiratory stuff was getting to me,” Glasgow said before practice Friday.
Glasgow said he wasn’t feeling terrific after the Oct. 25 Kansas City game. He missed the win over the Los Angeles Chargers and the loss at Atlanta.
“I was a little sick for the week before the diagnosis and it didn’t really help it was pretty cold when we played the Chiefs so I had thought I had caught a cold,” he said. “I was definitely surprised (by the positive test).
“It was particularly weird (watching) the Chargers game because I had been involved in the game-planning.”
Glasgow said he returned to the Broncos’ facility last Sunday for a “ramp-up period and work out and get my conditioning to a level that it was basically at before I got COVID.”
Glasgow has practiced all week and both he and coach Vic Fangio expect him to play the full game Sunday at Las Vegas.
“After not playing football for a couple of weeks, a little rusty, but other than that, I’ve been working through that and getting better this week and the conditioning aspect shouldn’t be an issue,” Glasgow said.
Injury updates. The Broncos are scheduled to practice Friday afternoon and beforehand, Fangio said inside linebacker/special teams core player Joe Jones will not play (calf) and reserve right tackle Jake Rodgers (shoulder) will be a game-time decision.
Fangio is “pretty confident” receiver Jerry Jeudy (shoulder) will be active.
If right tackle Demar Dotson (hand/groin) and his backup, Rodgers, can’t play, the Broncos will turn to Calvin Anderson.
Tackling troubles. A part of rookie cornerback Michael Ojemudia’s game that was attractive to the Broncos was his willingness to be physical in the run game and post-catch. But Ojemudia has a team-high 12 missed tackles this year, including six in the last two games.
“Just wrapping up and knowing where the help is at,” defensive backs coach Renaldo Hill said in a phone interview with The Denver Post. “If he’s going to take a shot on a guy and misses him, we must know where our leverage help is so at least (the offensive player) is going toward our defenders.”
Ojemudia is listed at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds and Hill said he has to “lower his strike zone,” against opponents.
“He’s tried to target bigger guys high and they’ve been able to knock him off or run through the tackle,” Hill said.
Said Fangio: “He’s got it in him (to improve) and we’re confident his tackling will start to be what we expect it to be.”
Booker finds role. Former Broncos running back Davontae Booker signed with Las Vegas in the offseason and has 33 carries for 223 yards (one touchdown) in 82 offensive snaps.
Last year, Booker played only 26 offensive snaps for the Broncos (two carries/six catches).
“He’s been really, really good,” Gruden said. “Obviously, Josh (Jacobs) is the featured back, but Devontae can come in and pick up blitzes, catch it and can run the ball extremely well. He’s been a real nice piece for us.”
Acclimating to Vegas. The Raiders are in their first season playing in Las Vegas, but the new Allegiant Stadium will be empty on Sunday.
“It’s like the ‘Twilight Zone,’ honestly,” coach Jon Gruden said. “We haven’t seen a fan in our stadium. We haven’t been on ‘The Strip’ or been out at all. It’s been really strange. It’s so exciting, though, to be in this (team) facility and in this city. We’re looking forward — as everybody else is — to beating this virus and getting back to normal and being a big part of the community. There are a lot of great people here. We can’t wait to meet them.”
