After powering back from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit to beat the Chargers, 31-30, the Broncos are now one game under .500 with a meeting with the 2-6 Falcons around the corner.
Hope springs eternal?
Here’s a look at how various national experts rated the Broncos in their power rankings entering Week 9:
Bleacher Report (No. 21) | Last week: No. 25
“With the two-win Falcons up next, the Broncos have a real chance to be a .500 team at the midway point of their season and at least on the fringes of the wild-card conversation.” See the full rankings.
CBS Sports (No. 31) | Last week: No. 23
“Could the late-game comeback against the Chargers be the moment that gets Drew Lock going as their long-term guy? He was impressive in the fourth quarter,” Pete Prisco writes. See the full rankings.
ESPN (No. 22) | Last week: No. 23
“The Broncos have seen both sides of the Lindsay riddle this season. When he is on the field and they’re willing to give him the ball, their offense is better — as in much better. But how many carries is too many carries is always a question given that Lindsay has missed three games and the second half of two others this season. But he leads all NFL running backs in yards per carry at 6.4. But with the Broncos having signed Melvin Gordon to a $16 million deal this offseason, Gordon’s snap count seems forced at times, to the detriment of Lindsay,” ESPN’s Jeff Legwold writes. NFL.com (No. 18) | Last week: No. 23
“Through three quarters on Sunday, the Broncos’ offense had managed 10 points on 156 yards of total offense. The Chargers’ lead ballooned to three touchdowns, and fans at Empower Field booed Drew Lock and Co. off the field. But everything changed in the final 15 minutes, as the Broncos reeled off 21 points and nearly 200 yards of offense in a stunning 31-30 victory. Lock went 14-of-18 passing for 155 yards with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, punctuated by a 14-play, 81-yard drive in the final minutes to steal one from the Bolts. It was the type of performance that can win over an entire fanbase — let’s see if Lock can build off this effort this Sunday in Atlanta,” Dan Hanzus writes. See the full rankings.
Sporting News (No. 20) | Last week: No. 22
“The Broncos showed fight in rallying to beat the Chargers with Drew Lock having arguably his best game of the season. They are finally playing their best skill players overall minus Courltand Sutton and saw overdue dividends from their second-year quarterback,” Vinnie Iyer writes. See the full rankings.
Sports Illustrated (No. 25) | Last week: No. 23
“Drew Lock appeared to use criticism about his recent play as motivation for his team’s second-half rally, in which the Broncos scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, including a literal last-second game-winning TD,” Jenny Vrentas writes. See the full rankings.
USA Today (No. 19) | Last week: No. 20
“OLB Bradley Chubb appears to be all the way back, posting at least one sack in each of his past four outings,” Nate Davis writes. See the full rankings.
Yahoo Sports (No. 18) | Last week: No. 22
“For most of Sunday’s game, Drew Lock didn’t get anything going. At halftime, he hadn’t thrown a touchdown pass since Week 1 against Tennessee. It’s overstating things to say the comeback and a three-touchdown second half saved his job in the short and long term. He certainly needed something positive, and came through in a big way,” Frank Schwab writes. See the full rankings.
