Nuggets accept terms with Genuine Madrid PG Facundo Campazzo on two-year offer, conforming to reports

The Nuggets and Real Madrid point guard Facundo Campazzo have agreed on a two-year contract, according to multiple reports Friday.

Terms of the deal were not immediately known, and no deal can become official until Sunday at 10 a.m. MST.

There’s been speculation for months Campazzo, 29, would make the jump to the NBA. He’s been on the Nuggets’ radar for longer than that.

Despite his 5-foot-11 frame, Campazzo’s a gifted passer known for his flash and creativity. The Argentinian guard has been with Real Madrid since 2014, where he was once teammates with Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.

This past season, he averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 assists competing in the EuroLeague. He’s also a two-time Olympian with Argentina’s national team.

An accomplished player overseas, his next challenges will be adapting his game to the NBA and finding a role in Denver. To start, he’ll likely share backup point guard duties with Nuggets reserve Monte Morris, who’s made himself a vital part of the rotation. Nuggets coach Michael Malone has immense trust in Morris’ steady play.

Campazzo competes hard defensively, and the Nuggets love having multiple playmakers on the court together. Even though they’d represent a smaller backcourt, it’s not out of the question that he and Morris could see time together.

While the move could be viewed as insurance against Morris potentially leaving Denver, the Nuggets, according to a league source, want to reach an extension with Morris. The 25-year-old has said the same thing publicly. An extension can happen anytime throughout this upcoming season.

Based on conversations with league sources, a deal could land in the neighborhood of $8 million to $9 million annually for Morris, who some league insiders think is good enough to start.

The Campazzo addition, while bringing another creative passer from Europe to play alongside Nikola Jokic, gives the Nuggets some measure of protection.
