The Nuggets topped off an eventful evening Wednesday night when they reached an agreement on a two-way deal with Marquette sharpshooter Markus Howard following the NBA draft, a league source told The Denver Post.
Despite being 5-foot-11, Howard led the NCAA in scoring at 27.8 points per game. The deal can’t be made official until free agents can sign Sunday.
While Howard’s height is a concern and may make it hard for him defensively, his blistering 3-point shooting is not. Howard’s worst 3-point shooting percentage across four years at Marquette was 40.3%. His best, during his freshman year, topped out at 54%. Howard set the school record with 2,761 points throughout his career.
Players on two-way contracts are generally allowed only 45 days in the NBA. However, due to the nature of the upcoming season, the NBA has relaxed its rules. There’s no 45-day service limit for two-way players this year. Instead, the NBA said in a recent memo that two-way players can’t be on the active list for more than 50 games.
In other words, Howard will get to spend far more time around the Nuggets than is typical of two-way players.
Bol Bol is Denver’s only other two-way player. NBA training camp begins Dec. 1.
The deal wrapped a significant night for the Nuggets, who selected Arizona C Zeke Nnaji at No. 22 and then traded back into the draft two picks later to take combo guard R.J. Hampton.
