Broncos Mailbag: Amidst Jerry Jeudy's battles, carries out Drew Lock likewise merit critical remarks?

Is the rash of injuries more attributable to conditioning and training or plain bad luck?

— Matthew Geary, Cheyenne, Wyo.

Back in training camp, when the Broncos had several players sitting out with soft-tissue injuries (hamstring/calf), the thought was the camp schedule wasn’t conducive to keeping guys healthy during the month of August.

But outside linebacker Von Miller’s ankle injury and the rash of ACL tears that ended the seasons of receiver Courtland Sutton, tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and cornerbacks Essang Bassey, Duke Dawson and Kevin Toliver? Unfortunate luck.

Ryan, I know a lot of people are putting the blame on Jerry Jeudy for those drops (those last two were completely horrible). But doesn’t Drew Lock deserve to shoulder some of that criticism? Get rid of Jeudy’s five drops and Lock still had zero touchdown passes and two interceptions. There were some throws he made that were way off course. It’s like there’s something wrong with his mechanics, like he’s not stepping into his throws.

— Marshall, Parker

Lock’s completion percentage was a not-great 51.1%, but accounting for the Broncos’ six drops (five by Jeudy and one by tight end Noah Fant), the rate would have jumped up to 63.8%.

That said, Lock probably wanted some throws back, including his downfield shot to Jeudy in the fourth quarter and the ground-ball to receiver DaeSean Hamilton to start the final possession.

I don’t see a quarterback whose mechanics are consistently flawed. Does he throw off target when on the move? Yes. Was his first-quarter interception — side-armed, off-his-back-foot — ill-advised? Yes.

Given that Washington just released quarterback Dwayne Haskins, should the Broncos pick him up?

No.

Heck no.

No way.

NO!

Haskins was a horrible pick by Washington, engineered by owner Dan Snyder and then-general manager/alumni director Bruce Allen. They were enamored with Haskins, the D.C. area native, when in fact, they should have looked at his limited sample size at Ohio State and went another direction.

Would, could, should the Broncos consider Eric Bieniemy as their new coach?

— Michael W. Sullivan, Springdale, Ark.

The Broncos have a coach for 2021 and it’s the same guy (Vic Fangio) who currently coaches their team. My guess is Bieniemy ends up in Houston paired with a new general manager. Outside of quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Texans job should not have much appeal since it has a barren depth chart, few draft picks and salary cap issues.

If there is a chance that the Broncos could get Trevor Lawrence in the draft, do you think John Elway will actually pass that up? I’m thinking he would not, but again I am not employed as one of the top brass of the organization so he might let Lawrence slip through his fingers.

— Del, Lamar

This is a moot point because a quarterback-needy team (Jacksonville) has secured the No. 1 pick and the allure in hiring a new coach and new general manager is they will be able to select Lawrence to anchor their franchise.

With an eye on the draft, who would be the best possible pick for the Broncos, assuming no trading up or down? And do you think there’s much chance Von Miller gives back some salary so the team can afford to pay Justin Simmons? Thanks.

— Fred Waiss, Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Miller won’t be giving up any money. If he and the Broncos reach agreement on a contract extension, it will be to be spread the guaranteed money out over a period of years, which lowers his cap numbers in 2021 and beyond.

Where the Simmons money will come from is if the Broncos move on from defensive end Jurrell Casey and cornerback A.J. Bouye.

The Broncos could be in the top 10 of the draft win or lose against Las Vegas on Sunday. The last two games have exposed the need for cornerback help. In fact, I would consider drafting one in the first round and also in the second or third round.
