No. 4 Denver falls to No. 3 Minnesota Duluth in period opener

The Denver Pioneers gave up back-to-back power-play goals in the third period to fall to Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in their season opener Wednesday night at Baxter Arena. The Pioneers stayed out of the box for the first 40 minutes but gave the Bulldogs three power-play opportunities in the third period.

Minnesota Duluth scored on a too- many-men penalty at 13:04 and again 48 seconds later on McKade Webster’s tripping penalty at 13:52.

The Pioneers opened scoring in the second period when Bo Hanson’s wrist shot deflected off the stick of a UMD defenseman.

Duluth took the lead in the third period and didn’t look back. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals in 48 seconds on secondary shots on net to clip the Pios in their season opener.

Denver looks to rebound against North Dakota on Friday Dec. 4 at 6:35 p.m.
