The Avalanche erupted for three goals in a span of 3:06 in the first period and added four goals in the second in pounding the San Jose Sharks 7-3 on Tuesday at Ball Arena. The game story is here.
Five takeaways
Bo knows hockey. Rookie defenseman Bo Byram, 19, started the game and logged a team-high 21:14 in his fourth career NHL game. He played that much because the Avs took a 7-2 lead into the third period.
“The more ice time he gets, the better he’s going to get in this league,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said.
But Bednar also said Byram — the first defenseman selected in the 2019 draft (fourth overall) — played that much because he has built trust.
“He led our team in minutes because, first of all, he earned that ice time, and the second part of it is … we just got done with four (games) in six (days) and we’re getting ready to play four in six. He’s a young guy with lots of legs and you kind of start going through the third period and you shorten the bench,” Bednar said. “You get a lead and then you want to give some guys some opportunity. So he got some power-play time tonight, did a nice job. Just keeping putting him out there as much as you can.”
Byram, who partnered with Sam Girard on the second pairing, can play six NHL games until the first year of his entry-level contract kicks in. Bryam is not eligible to play in the minors and he can only be returned to his junior team in Vancouver if the Avs don’t commit to keeping him for the full NHL season.

The Avs are the only NHL team to score seven goals twice this year, and one of just three to reach seven goals once. Montreal, Vancouver and Dallas have put up seven goals in one game. Colorado hasn’t scored seven or more goals in consecutive home games since 1995-96. Also, the Avalanche went 1-of-5 on the power play Tuesday and now has a league-high 11 power-play goals.
Even strength. The Avs scored five of their seven goals at even-strength. In the first six games, Colorado combined for just eight even-strength goals. Most importantly, the Avs got two even-strength goals from their second line — both scored by left winger Brandon Saad.
On the PK. The Avs are perfect at home in penalty killing. In three games, they are 11-for-11, including 5-for-5 on Tuesday.
As expected. Sophomore Cale Makar, the reigning Calder Trophy winner as NHL rookie of the year, had three assists Tuesday and now leads the NHL in scoring among defensemen with eight points. Fellow Avs blue liners Sam Girard and Devon Toews have six and five points, respectively, and Colorado is the only NHL team with three guys in the top 15 of defensemen scoring.
