With 3:25 to go in an intense, back-and-forth contest, Montana led on its home court by 5, the most it had all game.
And, while that 57-52 Grizzly lead would evaporate quickly, the home team had a chance at overtime at least, tying the game at 62 apiece with just 15 seconds left in the game.
That’s before Brodie Hume took matters into his own hands. Hume’s final-second jumper gave the University of Northern Colorado men’s basketball team the final lead Saturday and the win, 64-62, to edge the Bears to an overall record of 5-3 and to a conference record of 2-1.
Hume’s 14 points tied with Daylen Kountz for second-most in a balanced Bears scoring effort, which was led by Tre’Shon Smoots’ 16. Hume was an extremely efficient from the field, scoring on all but one of his six shots, including two 3-pointers, though he was just 2-for-6 from the free-throw line. He, Smoots, Kur Jockuch and Jamel Mevin all contributed four boards in a balanced rebounding effort that topped the Grizzlies’ total by two.
The lead changed 10 times after the Bears jumped out to an early 13-point lead in the first half. Part of that Montana charge came thanks to a second-half domination from the charity stripe, where the Grizzlies were 13-of-13 in the half to the Bears’ woeful 4-of-11 performance.
But better shooting from the field, coming in part from excellent offensive ball movement, put Hume, the team’s leading scorer on the season, in position to be the hero with the near-buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the game.
The Bears, who split the conference season-opening back-to-back with Idaho State at home, will look for their first conference sweep in another back-to-back with Montana, a strange quirk of the pandemic scheduling. That game will be played a 9 a.m. Monday in Missoula, Montana.
