Mountain ranges firmly insist Nolan Arenado field performs certainly not indicate reconstruct: "Our experts possess an extremely gifted staff"

The Rockies apparently don’t believe in the “R” word.

Rebuild.

Even after shaking Rockies nation to its core with Monday’s trade of star third baseman Nolan Arenado to St. Louis, owner Dick Monfort and general manager Jeff Bridich insisted Tuesday that the Rockies will remain a competitive team in 2021.

What’s more, they said there are no immediate plans to trade all-star shortstop Trevor Story, even though he’s eligible to become a free agent after this season. Bridich, in fact, said Story will be with the Rockies when they open the season April 1 against the Dodgers.

But he also added: “We certainly cherish having Trevor as our shortstop. It’s difficult to predict what the coming months are going to look like.”

Monfort opened the hour-long news conference with a statement.

“We have an extremely talented team,” he said. “They are built to compete. It’s time for them to take the next step. We are excited for our season ahead and look forward to the challenges.”

The Rockies, of course, are coming off two miserable seasons with a combined winning percentage of .437, but Monfort continues to believe the current team can turn things around.

“We’re shorter on talent than we were a year ago,” he said. “But we’ve got a lot of guys, that to be quite honest, It’s time to (fish or) cut bait. This could be the challenge that they need. They need to step up and fill this void.”

Two of the players who will need to step up are Ryan McMahon, who will likely move from second base to third to try to fill Arenado’s shoes, and Brendan Rodgers (the third overall pick in 2015), who needs to prove himself as a big-league second baseman.

“Their readiness is key, and we have guys on the roster that we feel like are well-positioned to take advantage of this opportunity,” Bridich said. “We have players off the roster in the organization that certainly will garner consideration.”
