Next Sunday, an ex-Broncos player will be tasked with protecting the blind side of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs seek to repeat.
Mike Remmers, who signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State in 2012, will start at left tackle at Raymond James Stadium against Tampa Bay. The Chiefs will be without both of their starting tackles, as Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher suffered an Achilles injury in the AFC Championship win over the Bills and All-Pro right tackle Mitchell Schwartz has been on injured reserve with a back injury since Week 11.
Remmers, a 31-year-old Portland native, has helped pick up the slack for Kansas City. After starting just one of the Chiefs’ first five games, Remmers began filling in for Schwartz in Week 6 and then slid over to left tackle last Sunday when Fisher went down.
While in Denver, Remmers didn’t make much of an impact with Zane Beadles and Orlando Franklin holding down the starting tackle jobs. Remmers was cut late in training camp in 2012. He cycled through the Buccaneers, Chargers and Rams organizations before finally latching on with the Panthers, for whom he started every game in 2015 and 2016.
Kansas City hopes that Remmers plays better than his first performance on the NFL’s biggest stage, especially considering the firepower the Buccaneers have rushing the quarterback in defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and linebackers Devin White and Shaq Barrett.
Remmers got dominated as Carolina’s starting right tackle in the Super Bowl 50 loss to the Broncos, allowing seven quarterback hurries and three of the Broncos’ sacks. The first one Remmers allowed set the tone in Denver’s 24-10 win, as the game’s MVP, Von Miller, cruised by Remmers for a strip-sack of quarterback Cam Newton. Malik Jackson recovered the ball in the end zone for an early 10-0 lead.
