Spring season winter sports industrious as mountain highs this weekend could possibly reach 20 levels greater than ordinary

Classic spring skiing conditions will be prevalent across Colorado this weekend with balmy temperatures and only a couple of ski areas expected to receive any snow.

This is the kind of forecast that brings out skiers and riders in swimsuits or tank tops. Only the southern mountains have a chance of a few showers this weekend with minimal accumulations, according to OpenSnow meteorologist Joel Gratz.

“From Thursday to Monday, expect plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, which will rise into the 40s at most mountains and likely into the 50s or warmer for many base areas,” Gratz wrote in his Thursday morning report. “The warmest days should be Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This will be a time for classic spring skiing and riding with firm and crunchy snow in the morning. Conditions will rapidly soften by mid-morning and midday.”

Gratz sees the possibility of mountain snow coming in the middle of next week, but it doesn’t look like it will be substantial.

“Our next chance for a storm will be sometime between Tuesday and Thursday,” Gratz wrote. “Yesterday, three of four major (forecasting) models agreed about the track of the storm. Today, zero of four major models agree about the track of the storm. It does look like there will be a chance for snow during the middle of next week, but at this point, I am keeping my expectations low as most models show the highest likelihood for the most snow over Wyoming and Idaho, and the Northwest, with just a glancing blow for us here in Colorado.”
