University of Northern Colorado football is grieving yet another death related to the program.
Myles Overton, 27, died this weekend. It’s unclear exactly when he died or what caused it, but friends and family have shared tributes to his life on social media, sharing about his fun but gentle personality.
“Our hearts are heavy learning of the passing of former student-athlete Myles Overton,” UNC said in a tweet on Monday. “We send our love and support to his parents; James and Wanda, his sisters; Lauren, Morgan and Mariah; and all who loved him.”
His sister, Morgan, wrote in a Facebook post that she is grateful for getting to spend time with him on the day he died and “see the smile on (his) face.”
“You were everything to me and to our family but we know you’re in a better place,” Morgan Overton wrote. “No more pain, my brother, no more worrying. They say the good die young but I will never begin to understand this one.”
Overton played for UNC from 2012 to 2016, redshirting his true freshman year. He became a staple on the Bears’ defensive line during his junior and senior seasons, logging 74 tackles, six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Overton’s stat sheet included four fumble recoveries as well.
The Flint, Michigan, native did not hear his name called in the 2017 NFL Draft but received an invitation to the Atlanta Falcons’ rookie mini camp that year.
Cynthia Gallegos, mother of senior defensive lineman Eddie Gonzales, commented on UNC Football’s tribute post. She said Overton took the time to provide Gonzales with “wisdom and encouragement.”
No details have been released regarding a memorial service.
In the last year, a number of people associated with the UNC football program have died, including assistant coach Zach Hoffpauir, former standout Vincent Jackson, and Aleshia Armour — Overland High School principal and wife of assistant coach Mike Armour.
