Mountain ranges' Day 2 of 2021 MLB receipt: Who Colorado chose in Rounds 2 via 10

Take a look at this piece by Kyle Newman, Kyle Fredrickson from The Denver Post talking about several important points this week. Kyle Newman, Kyle Fredrickson recently posted the article and I decided it was a great post for syndicating on this website.

The second day of the 2021 MLB Draft took place Monday at The Rally Hotel. Here’s who the Rockies selected on Monday in Rounds 2 through 10.

The draft concludes Tuesday with Rounds 11 through 40.

Round 2, No. 44 — RHP Jaden Hill (LSU)

Hill is a talented right-hander with fastball velocity reaching the high-90s. He was considered a potential top-five pick to begin his junior season. But Hill tore his UCL in early April and his draft stock tumbled. Hill recovered from Tommy John surgery to close the year 2-3 with a 6.67 ERA.

Competitive Balance Round B, No. 68 — LHP Joe Rock (Ohio University)

Rock garnered national attention back in late February when he pitched a no-hitter (seven innings) in a shutout win over Morehead State. Rock finished the season 8-3 with a 2.33 ERA over 14 starts. He was also named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team.

Round 3, No. 79 — RHP McCade Brown (Indiana)

Brown is a 6-foot-6 college junior with high-90s fastball velocity and a no-hitter (five innings vs. Penn State) on his resume. He went 5-4 with a 3.39 ERA this season, compiling 97 strikeouts over 61 innings. It earned Brown second-team All-Big Ten honors.

Round 4, No. 109 — C Hunter Goodman (Memphis)

Goodman hit .307 in 2021 and paired his high-average approach with 21 homers, which tied a Memphis single-season record and was fourth best in the nation. He led the AAC with a .679 slugging percentage.

Round 5, No. 140 — LHP Evan Justice (NC State)

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound southpaw was one of the Wolfpack’s top arms over his four years in Raleigh. Justice posted a 4.71 career ERA over 76 appearances (seven starts), saving his best stuff for his senior year when he posted a 3.77 ERA with a .188 average against.

Round 6, No. 170 — C Braxton Fulford (Texas Tech)

Renowned as an elite defensive catcher, Fulford also came on strong with the bat as a senior. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder clubbed 14 homers as a senior after just five over his previous three seasons. He’s also capable of drawing walks (27 in 2021, with a .395 on-base percentage).

Round 7, No. 200 — LHP Evan Shawver (Cincinnati)

Shawver makes three southpaw selections on the second day for the pitching-needy Rockies. Shawver had a 4.62 ERA over three seasons with the Bearcats. But if you throw out his 7.19 ERA as a freshman, his arrow is way up, as he had a 1.59 ERA in 2020 and a 2.72 ERA in 2021.

Round 8, No. 230 — OF Robby Martin (Florida State)

At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Martin was a third-team All-ACC selection this year after hitting .260 with 11 homers. The left-handed hitter beefed up during his time at FSU and can drive the ball to all fields. There’s more power in Martin’s bat that he can grow into as a young pro.

Round 9, No. 260 — RHP Cullen Kafka (Oregon)

The Ducks’ No. 2 starter in 2021, Kafka was 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 84 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .247 average. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds he has plenty of upside considering his ERA fell markedly each year throughout college.

Round 10, No. 290 — OF Zach Kokoska (Kansas State)

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound left-handed hitter was All-Big 12 Conference second team in 2021 after slashing .363/.445/.675. A career .348 hitter, he also had a team-high 19 doubles this year and put together a 41-game on-base streak.
