Tom Brady at Mile High: Additional lows than highs for probably best-ever NFL quarterback

Throughout his career, Tom Brady has been at home on the road.

Brady has won 16-of-18 games at Buffalo, 14-of-18 at the New York Jets and even 5-of-7 at Indianapolis.

But there have been two speed bumps: Denver and Miami.

Brady is mysteriously 8-10 all-time in road games against the Dolphins (all in the regular season). Against the Broncos, he is 4-7. When Tampa Bay visits Sunday, it will likely be the 43-year-old’s final appearance at Mile High.

Through two games with the Buccaneers (1-1), Brady has three touchdowns and interceptions apiece, but …

“He doesn’t look any different to me, to be honest,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said. “He’s still got some really good arm strength and strong football intelligence in recognizing things. I don’t see a major difference other than the new uniform that he’s wearing.”

In a Patriots uniform, Brady had multiple great matchups with the Broncos at Mile High. Here is a recap of the 11 games:

2001: Broncos 30-21

Brady statistics: Completed 25-of-38 passes for 203 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Recap: Brady was making his fifth career start. The Patriots had leads of 10-0 and 20-10. Brady’s four interceptions remain tied for his single-game high (seven times).

Quote: “I’ve got to get a lot better at communicating out there and knowing where my receivers are going to be.” — Brady.

2003: Patriots 30-26

Brady statistics: Completed 20-of-35 passes for 350 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Recap: A legendary bit of coaching by Bill Belichick. Trailing 24-23 with 2:49 remaining, Belichick had the Patriots snap the ball out of the end zone for a Broncos safety. The Broncos went three-and-out and Brady got the ball back at the 2:15 mark and led a 58-yard drive capped by his 18-yard touchdown pass to David Givens with 30 seconds remaining.

Quote: “I really don’t know what to say. The bottom line is that in the end, we didn’t get it done and they did.” — Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

2005: Broncos 28-20

Brady statistics: Completed 24-of-46 passes for 299 yards and one touchdown.

Recap: The Broncos sprinted to a 21-3 first-half lead. Two Patriots touchdowns in the fourth quarter cut the lead to eight points, but they didn’t get back into Broncos territory. The Broncos rushed for 178 yards on 34 carries.

Quote: “It’s hard to beat a team when you only play 20 minutes.” — Brady.

2005 playoffs: Broncos 27-13

Brady statistics: Completed 20-of-36 passes for 341 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Recap: Brady came to Mile High with a 10-0 postseason record and three Super Bowl titles. Trailing 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Brady was intercepted by Champ Bailey, who returned it 100 yards to 1-yard line; Mike Anderson’s 1-yard touchdown sealed the game.

Quote: “It’s going to be a long flight home, it’s going to be a long offseason.” — Brady.

2009: Broncos 20-17

Brady statistics: Completed 19-of-33 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

Recap: Brady’s touchdown pass to tight end Benjamin Watson gave the Patriots a 17-7 halftime lead. Matt Prater’s 41-yard field goal with 10:09 remaining was the winner.

2011: Patriots 41-23

Recap: The first of two Brady-vs.-Tim Tebow matchups in the 2011 season. The Broncos led 16-7 before the Patriots scored 27 unanswered points.

Quote: “You’re not going to be minus-3 in turnovers against the New England Patriots and win many ballgames.” — Broncos coach John Fox.

2013 playoffs: Broncos 26-16

Brady statistics: Completed 24-of-38 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown.

Recap: The Broncos never trailed, building leads of 10-0, 23-3 and 26-10. Peyton Manning threw for 400 yards and two touchdowns.

Recap: The Broncos won the AFC title by battering Brady (four sacks and 11 other knockdowns). Brady threw a four-yard touchdown to tight end Rob Gronkowski with 12 seconds remaining, but his two-point conversion pass failed.

Quote: “I got hit pretty hard. We could never play with a lead. We never could play on our terms so it was an uphill battle all day.” — Brady.

2016: Patriots 16-3

Brady statistics: Completed 16-of-32 passes for 188 yards.

Recap: Compared to other Brady-at-Mile High games, this was a snoozer. The teams combined to go 7-of-29 on third down and the Patriots scored 10 points off Broncos turnovers.

Quote: “We made some plays, just didn’t make enough to score more points than what we did. But that was enough.” — Brady.

2017: Patriots 41-16

Brady statistics: Completed 25-of-34 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

Recap: Brady’s 125.4 passer rating was his best at Mile High. The Patriots led 27-6 at halftime.

Quote: “We did a really good job of running a balanced offense. It’s hard to play this team when they get a lead — they start to tee off on you.” — Brady.
